Migrating from Magento 1

Migrate from Magento 1 to Magento 2

Magento 1 has had no security patches since June 2020. Every extra month is risk you're choosing to carry.

Why people leave

The real reasons stores migrate off Magento 1

If none of these apply to you, you probably don't need to migrate. We'll say so directly, on the call.

  • The security risk is real, not theoretical

Magento 1 stores still online are known targets. Without official patches, any new vulnerability stays open permanently. Card skimmers on Magento 1 are a category of attack in their own right.

  • PCI compliance becomes a problem

Running an unsupported platform can complicate your PCI DSS audit and your relationship with your payment processor.

  • The ecosystem has left

Extensions are no longer updated, and the developers still working on Magento 1 are fewer and more expensive every year.

What's preserved

You lose nothing you've built

The most common fear about a migration is losing organic traffic. It's justified — and that's exactly why we treat it as the most important part of the project.

  • The URL structure, with 301s wherever it can't be preserved
  • Every product, category and attribute
  • Order history and customer accounts
  • Metadata, structured data and blog content
  • Product reviews
  • Payment and courier integrations

What's genuinely hard

Where a migration from Magento 1 gets complicated

We put this on the page because it turns up in the project anyway. Better you learn it now than in week six.

Magento 2 isn't an update, it's a new platform

The code doesn't transfer. Themes, extensions and customisations get rebuilt. Data migration has official tooling, but the code is a new project — that's the reality, and it's better to know it on day one.

Magento 1 extensions get replaced one by one

For each one we check whether a Magento 2 equivalent exists, whether the functionality became native, or whether it has to be written. The complete list comes from the audit.

Undocumented customisations

After years of development, Magento 1 stores carry layers of customisation nobody remembers. We find them beforehand, not at launch.

How it runs

Five stages, and the store stays live

We build on staging, alongside your current store. The switch happens in a short, planned window.

  1. Audit

We inventory the extensions that touch the frontend, measure Core Web Vitals on real field data, and identify what gets ported, what gets rewritten and what gets removed.

  2. Plan

You get the extension list with Hyvä compatibility status, a staged estimate and the risks we can see. This is where it's decided whether the migration is worth it — and we'll tell you honestly if it isn't.

  3. Build

The Hyvä theme is built alongside the live store. We don't stop your sales and we don't work in production.

  4. QA

Catalogue, filters, cart, checkout, payment methods, courier and ERP integrations. Tested on real devices, not just in an emulator.

  5. Launch

The URL structure stays untouched, metadata and structured data transfer one-to-one, and Search Console is watched daily through the first weeks.

Questions about migrating from Magento 1

What merchants ask us before deciding

Including “is it actually worth it?”. Sometimes the answer is no.

  • You can, but the risk sits at the application layer, where a firewall doesn't protect you. Community patches exist, but they don't cover everything and they don't solve the ecosystem problem. Our recommendation is to migrate; if the budget doesn't allow it now, we'll tell you what to secure in the meantime.

Ways to work together

Three ways to start

We don't sell rigid packages. These are the usual entry points — the final scope gets set once we've seen the store.

  • Magento audit

Find out exactly what you have and what it costs you, before changing anything.

    Who it's for:
For existing stores, whoever built them. Useful even if you stay with your current agency.
    Duration:
    5–7 working days
    • Core Web Vitals measured on real field data
    • Extension inventory, with Hyvä compatibility status
    • Technical SEO audit: crawlability, indexing, structured data
    • Funnel analysis through to the order
    • A report with priorities, estimates and risks
    • An hour going through it with the technical team
    Request the audit
  • Cel mai cerut

    Hyvä migration

From stock theme to a store that loads in under 1.5 seconds.

    Who it's for:
For working Magento 2 stores where speed is holding conversion back.
    Duration:
    6–10 weeks
    • Everything in the audit
    • A Hyvä theme built on your visual identity
    • Porting the extensions that touch the frontend
    • Core Web Vitals optimised into the green
    • QA on catalogue, checkout, payments, couriers and ERP
    • Launch with 1:1 SEO parity and 30 days of monitoring
    Request an estimate
  • Takeover & maintenance

We take the store over from your current agency and keep it in shape.

    Who it's for:
For stores left without a technical team, or unhappy with their current agency.
    Duration:
    Monthly retainer
    • Handover of code, access and documentation
    • Magento version upgrades and security patches
    • Uptime and performance monitoring
    • Development hours included every month
    • An incident response SLA
    • A monthly activity and performance report
    Discuss a takeover

We don't show fixed prices because a store with 200 products and one with 40,000 don't cost the same. You get a staged estimate after the first conversation, with nothing attached.
