Search and relevance

The most profitable screen in your store is the search box

Customers who search already intend to buy. If the engine can't find their product, you lose precisely the most valuable visitors you have.

What usually goes wrong

Six reasons search doesn't find things

Check them against your own store. Five minutes testing with your own products tells you more than any report.

  • Default search doesn't understand your catalogue's language

Out of the box, singular and plural are different words, and accented characters typed either way give different results. This is solved with language analysers and normalisation, not with an extension.

  • Relevance is scored on text, not on business

The engine matches words. You want the in-stock, good-margin, proven sellers at the top. That is configured separately, through ranking rules.

  • Typos are unforgiving

“adidass”, “iphon”, “samsug”. Without typo tolerance, every mistyped query is a lost order.

  • Filters don't match what people actually search for

Faceted navigation is only useful if the attributes are clean. In a catalogue with supplier-imported data, they almost never are.

  • Synonyms are missing

The customer searches “trainers”, you sell “sneakers”. Or they search the commercial name and you carry the manufacturer code. The synonym list is built from what people actually type on your site, not from a dictionary.

  • Nobody reads the search reports

Magento's search reports show exactly what customers want and what they can't find. It's the cheapest source of product and content ideas there is, and it's almost always untouched.

What we choose, and when

Three options, with the real arguments

We have no reseller agreement with any of them. We recommend what fits your catalogue and your budget.

  • Included with Magento

    OpenSearch / Elasticsearch

The mandatory engine since Magento 2.4. It works, but the default configuration is minimal. For plenty of stores, tuning it properly is all that's needed.

    Advantage
    No additional licence cost
    Worth knowing
Tuning takes time and knowledge; there's no admin interface for it
  • Open source

    ElasticSuite

Replaces Magento's search engine and faceted navigation, with relevance that also accounts for behaviour. The default choice for large catalogues that don't want a recurring cost.

    Advantage
Substantially better relevance, with no subscription
    Worth knowing
Needs server resources and maintenance at every upgrade
  • Hosted service

    Algolia

External search, very fast, with a good admin interface for managing rules. Cost scales with the number of searches and records.

    Advantage
Speed, and easy control for the marketing team
    Worth knowing
Recurring cost that grows with traffic; dependency on an external supplier

How we work

Five steps, the first being to look at the data

Most of the gain comes from cleaning up attributes, not from changing the engine. It's boring, and it's true.

  1. Measure

    What people search for now

We start from the search reports and from analytics: the terms with volume, the ones returning zero results, and the ones with a high bounce rate. That's where the problem shows, not in impressions.

  2. Clean up

    The attributes everything rests on

Without consistent attributes, no engine configuration helps. It's the unglamorous part and usually the one that brings the most.

  3. Configure

    Language, synonyms, typo tolerance

Language analysers, character normalisation, a synonym list built from real data, and sensible fuzzy-matching thresholds.

  4. Rank

Business rules on top of relevance

Stock, margin, recency, promoted products. The engine finds them; you decide the order.

  5. Verify

A before-and-after on the terms that matter

We run the same terms before and after and compare what appears in the top three. The result is visible, not assumed.

Căutarea e o parte din performanța magazinului. Restul — Core Web Vitals, viteza de randare, structura tehnică — sunt pe pagina de performance și pe cea de SEO tehnic.

Frequently asked

What merchants ask us about search

If your question isn't here, call us. We answer the ones other agencies would rather avoid.

  • For most stores, a properly configured OpenSearch or ElasticSuite covers everything needed. Algolia earns its place at high search volumes, or when the marketing team wants to control the rules themselves without a developer.

Want to know what your customers can't find?

Send us your store's address. We'll run a set of real searches and show you where your products appear — and where they don't appear at all.
