What happens without maintenance
A Magento store left alone breaks by itself
Not all at once. Slowly, until fixing it costs more than preventing it would have.
Security patches don't apply themselves
Adobe publishes Magento patches several times a year. A store with missing patches is a known target — card skimmers look for exactly the unpatched versions.
An old version becomes a dead end
The longer you postpone the upgrade, the more expensive it gets. At some point the only option left is a rebuild, at several times the cost.
Nobody is watching performance
Stores degrade slowly: a new extension here, an unoptimised image there. Without monitoring, you find out from the falling sales.
When it goes down, you lose orders by the minute
Without an SLA and without someone who already has your store's context, a one-hour problem becomes a one-day problem.
What the retainer covers
Three areas, covered monthly
The exact level is set after we audit the store — a shop with 500 products and one with 40,000 don't have the same needs.
Security
- Applying official Magento patches
- Updating extensions with known vulnerabilities
- Monitoring the versions in the stack (PHP, MySQL, Elasticsearch)
- Verified backups, with periodic restore tests
Operation
- Uptime monitoring, with alerting
- Core Web Vitals monitoring on real data
- Checking cron jobs and indexing
- Watching the error logs
Development
- Development hours included monthly, rolled over if unused
- Planned version upgrades
- Content and catalogue changes
- A monthly activity and performance report
Not sure what's in your store?
We start with a code audit. You find out exactly which extensions you have, what's vulnerable and what it costs you in technical debt — useful even if you stay with your current supplier.
Questions about maintenance
What people ask when they're changing supplier
If your question isn't here, call us. We answer the ones other agencies would rather avoid.
Yes, that's the most common case. We start with a code audit that shows us what we're taking on — and shows you what you have, often for the first time.
What it costs
What moves the price of a maintenance retainer
We don't publish a fixed rate because it would be false: a store with 500 products and one with 40,000 don't take the same work. What we publish instead is what moves the number.
Your Magento version
A store on an out-of-support version needs an upgrade first. Until then, maintenance can't do what it should.
The number of extensions
Every extension is a dependency that has to be tracked at every patch. Ten extensions and sixty are not the same effort.
How much custom code you have
Overrides and bespoke integrations are what break most often at update time. The more there are, the longer the testing.
The response level
Guaranteed response time costs money. Under an hour in business hours is a different thing from next working day.
Development hours included
The predictable part of the retainer. Set according to how often you need changes.
Infrastructure
If we take on the server too, that brings monitoring, stack updates and a recovery plan.
If you're also interested in the cost of building rather than only of maintaining, we've written about what a Magento 2 store costs. Running something that isn't Magento? See website and store maintenance, which covers WooCommerce, Shopify and PrestaShop too.
End of support
Magento 2.4.6, 2.4.5 și 2.4.4 no longer receives security patches
The store keeps working exactly as before. What changed is that any newly discovered vulnerability no longer gets an official fix for your version. At the last critical vulnerability, mass exploitation reached half of all Magento stores within four days.
Want a maintenance proposal?
Tell us your store's address and which Magento version you're on. We'll send a proposal with a service level and hours included.
